DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR ILLINOIS STATE SENATE

CHRISTOPHER BELT

I pledged to fight on behalf of the residents who comprise the 57th Senate district, focusing on fairly funded quality education, safe neighborhoods and communities, dependable family-sustaining jobs and access to affordable and exceptional healthcare.
I want to go to Springfield to represent these issues for my community and I am prepared to work hard and work with integrity to build relationships across the aisle in the hopes of creating a more vigorous local economy that will create a stronger and vibrant Illinois.

About Christopher Belt

Christopher Belt grew up in Centreville, Illinois the youngest of six children to Curtis, owner of a construction company, and Lula Belt, a homemaker. Belt received his formal education in the East Saint Louis School District #189, where he graduated from Lincoln Sr. HS in 1990. Belt holds a Bachelor’s degree in history from Illinois State University, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from SIUE and a Master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Lindenwood-Belleville. Belt is married to his wife of 21 years and counting, Stephanie Scurlark-Belt. They have two children, Christianna Yvonne Belt, 21, a senior at Spelman College in Atlanta, and Stephon Christopher, 18, a freshman at Robert Morris College in Chicago.

Christopher Belt |Husband & Father

As a husband, father and mentor, Belt knows that the foundation to any hope can only be found in education. Yet, Belt has watched as educational funding has steadily decreased, while our obligation to fund prisons has increased. In an effort to make a difference, Belt has dedicated and committed the last four years of his life serving as a board member for Cahokia Unit School District #187, serving the last two years as Board President. As School Board president, Belt has stressed the importance of meaningful and authentic accountability and he plans to bring those same virtues to Springfield as a state senator.

Christopher Belt | My Career

As a former law enforcement officer, Belt knows first-hand the importance and the impact of pairing youth with mentors to help guide them through their formative pre-teen and teenage years. In 2003, Belt founded the Difference Makers Professional Organization to strengthen the decision-making capabilities of males from nine to eighteen years of age. In addition to his mentor work, Belt authored a character/education book in 2008 titled, “The Adventures of Nate the Gnat”, to teach youth on how to be safe, responsible citizens.

Belt enjoyed an 18-year career as a law enforcement officer. Belt spent 16 years in St. Clair County Probation and Detention and two years with the state of Illinois as the Regional Deputy Administrator of Aftercare (formerly Juvenile parole) for the Central and Southern Regions of Illinois. Belt has previously held various positions in St Clair County Probation and Detention from Juvenile Correction Officer, Juvenile Probation Officer, Electronic Leg Monitoring Officer (House Arrest) to supervisor of Juvenile Probation. Throughout his law enforcement career, Belt learned not to judge juveniles in the criminal justice system and that with the proper resources, most offenders are successful in completing parole or probation.
